The band was founded in 1999 in Budapest (Hungary) by the Moroccan musician Saïd Tichiti. It is very dynamic in the african jazz/world music scene. It is testing a very original opening of Moroccan music to the music traditions of Central Europe, Balkan and gypsy styles.
Chalaban combines the traditions of the band leader’s homeland with music from the Carpathian Basin. The music sees a return to its African roots, with the discovery of South Moroccan musical influences which stretch even further south to the Sudan region.
Chalaban released 6 albums. The latest one, Gleimim, was presented in October 2017 in a sold out concert in the Palace of Art (MÜPA) in Budapest (Hungary).
