Beginning as an outlet for performing for songwriter Daria Dzurik and her debut 2010 album ‘Calliope’, Daria & The Hip Drops developed as a fusion between the singer, steel pannist, and keyboardist next to producer and bassist Graham Robinson. The group has continued to grow under their teamwork, along with a collaboration of other artists that provide backing grooves. Although the group has its roots in upbeat indie pop and rock, influences are wide with steel pan and Caribbean flavor, heavy funk bass lines, and the occasional electro-synth sample. Artists and bands like Santigold, The Talking Heads, Toots & The Maytals, and the early days of No Doubt have present influences in the band’s sound, as well as the music and culture from New Orleans, to Miami and Trinidad & Tobago.

The band derived its name from a song and dance “Hip Drop” by The Explosions, a New Orleans funk band from the 60’s. Songs put together by Daria & The Hip Drops have been sculpted to bring out certain musical elements, whether it be harmonies or rhythms, with a blend of genres of music. “I try to vary how I start to write a song…some days I like the element of melody to be my focus, and then on another day I’ll switch and try to create a different song just based off a rhythmic pattern or a harmonic progression. It keeps songwriting interesting” says the lead singer. Subject matter of songs range from vocal lines about the intricacies of relationships and politics to the simplicity of just dancing, allowing for relatable lyrics for a variety of listeners.

On the side of the Hip Drops, Daria has played with members of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band, Disney’s Imagination Movers, Birdsong Steel Orchestra, and continues to play with Mike Dillon’s Punk Rock Percussion Consortium. Meanwhile, other Hip Drops are performing with Zachary Richard, John Papa Gros, Raw Oyster Cult, and Jon Cleary.
